Tucson Everyone Runs Half Marathon 1:30:00 **Bandit**

Had a fun run at the Everyone Runs Half Marathon in Tucson this morning.  I ran a flat 1:30:00 as a bandit.  I felt pretty good and fast today.  I didn't expect to go this fast but I got to 10 miles and felt like I could bust 1:30:00, but when it was all said and done I couldn't get the final mile done any faster.  Here are my splits:

I found this incredible cartoon at a friends blog and had to repost it (thanks Brownie)

Another big milestone I crossed today was going further today then I did all last year.  I'm at 2733 right now.  I'm chasing 3000 miles by year end and think I'm on track, as long as I don't suffer any injuries.  It has been a great year and I feel like I will take a step back as I learn my new job up in Chicago and get used to running in a new place.  I think I will have a fair amount of travel with my new job, plus I just don't know how life in such cold weather will be?  Maybe I am spoiled by the great weather here in Arizona and I will not be so motivated in Chicago. Anyway, the past two years have been a running dream and I am really glad that I got the 100 mile benchmark under my belt.

  1. What a jerk thing to do! Do you have any idea how much it cost us to put on this race? And, you rationalize your actions because we're a small race! Big or small, this is pure unadulterated theft. Did you enjoy our safe and secure course that employed seven police officers and an entire barricade company? Did you enjoy the live music, the free breakfast, free smoothies, free photos and ther services of our timer? That's just touching the surface of our expenses. What a great lesson to teach you children. To sum it up: you are a thief and you stole from us. You should be ashamed to call yourself an army officer. I am going to do everything in my power to contact your superiors.

  2. I agree 100% with "Everyone Runs" above. So basically those of us who don't steal end up having to pay more money for races so organizers can accommodate "bandits." Not cool. Not a good lesson to teach your kids either.

  3. Same as above dude. As a race director, I resent the fact that you discount the effort it takes to put on a safe, well run and enjoyable race for everyone. Many sponsors, volunteers and other runners worked hard to make your 'small race' experience a good one.

Think about what you brag about in the future, and then think even harder about the information you share about yourself here. Your online presence is very obvious J.B.

  4. It's interesting that you would boast about being a proud father, a military officer and a crook all on the same page. You, your family and those that follow you should all be ashamed.

  5. First off, my name is Jordan and I finished this race just behind you. (we chatted during the last mile because your Javelina shirt caught my eye)
    DUDE,
Do you understand that amazing running events (like THIS half marathon) don't organize or pay for themselves? "Everyone Runs" has bent over backwards to put together some of the most beautiful, fun, and inclusive running events you will find anywhere! And they are there because of a passion for running and the desire to share that passion with EVERYONE! The only way it is possible for that to happen, and continue to happen, is by the participants of each race paying the reasonable entry fees and having an amazing group of hard working volunteers to dedicate their time and energy into making these races happen. You say that you feel "ok" with being a bandit because of the fact that it's a small town running company and you didnt feel the need for the shirt? That is a straight slap across the face to hard working organizer of the event, and quite frankly makes my blood boil. You are a full time Army officer with a family which means you make enough money to pay the very reasonable entry fee with ease, you just chose not to.
WELL sir, my name is JORDAN CAMASTRO. I am an ultra-marathoner from Tucson Arizona, and I am a huge supporter of the running community here. With that being said I feel it is my responsibility to tell you that you should be ashamed of yourself. As an officer in the Army you are supposed to be a leader, supposed to be a role model, and supposed to be someone to set an example for others.... think about that. I think the man who worked his ass off to organize that race deserves an apology... and his name is Steve.
Do the proper thing and write him an apology, and send him a check for the race fee while your at it. ~jordan.
PS- good luck at any running races your planning on doing in the future here in AZ, I'm sure you'll find yourself very welcome there!

  6. I agree with Jordan. Show up at another race around here and you will not be welcome. It's called stealing.

  7. Jeffery Bott--In addition to being very unethical, you are clearly lacking a bit of intelligence. Who in their right mind would boast about their sponsor and stealing in the same place? Are you not aware that Muscle Milk will likely not be too happy to hear about your unethical behavior? Do you even care? You've got some serious thinking to do, and I'd hope you end up with the right answer this time.

  8. I just can't believe you are an officer in the military and openly bragging about stealing. I come from a military family (some presently active duty and serving in Afghanistan). I just cannot believe you are here bragging about your behavior. Wow! What happened to honor and integrity?
I realize competing in a lot of races costs money. Maybe the cost is your justification. So, make a budget. That's what those of us who are more responsible do.
A few months ago my son said he wanted to do el Tour de Tucson. He and his buddy were going to ride as bandits (they are both in high school and money is tight). I told him "no way. riding as a bandit is stealing". When you benefit from the support of the race organizers, and have not paid the costs, you are stealing. hmmm Did I mention I think running as a bandit is the same as stealing? How would your superiors in the Army feel about that?
I am so grateful Everyone Runs puts together this race on the east side of Tucson in one of the most beautiful places to run. I will support Everyone Runs over other local marathons and half-marathons for this very reason. What kind of example are you setting for your children? You should be ashamed of yourself.
    Wow!

  9. I suggest you pay your fair share and apologize to Everyone Runs ... sir! Pathetic ...

  10. Not much more to add... I surely agree with everyone else before me commenting here. Expect one thing: on behalf of anyone else who serves/d proudly - and honorably - for this great country... you are an embarrassment & a disgrace!

  11. Lame. My friend spent her morning volunteering for this race because she wanted to support the running community in Tucson. Wish you felt the same way.

  12. Conduct unbecoming, dude.

Next time you don't want to pay, just run the same distance somewhere else, where there is no event.

  13. ANOTHER "big milestone" you crossed today is STEALING & being a HORRIBLE example to everyone you are bragging to in person & on your blog.

I hope you are not raising children with your lack of values. You are a disgrace to the running community & should know better. I would be so embarrassed to be you.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Wow. You are a real piece of work. What a sh*tty thing to do. You should be ashamed of yourself. What happened to integrity? Did you miss that part in Army training?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Seriously, conduct unbecoming. I can only hope you are a newly pinned CPT who hasn't quite got done doing the stupid stuff of his youth. But you have children and they certainly deserve to be raised with more more turpitude than you obviously have. Please remember every time you choose to discipline or counsel any other Soldiers on the Army values that you skip over integrity. You'd hate to be a hypocrite.

  16. I hope you get shin-splints.

  17. Tucson's running community welcomes everyone regardless of their speed or preferred distance. We are a friendly crowd that supports each other, our local running stores and race organizers. An apology is in order to Steve at Everybody Runs as well as the entry fee. I am not sure why you would state that you are an Army officer and still admit that you also ran Pat's Run as a bandit. Do you understand the disconnect between your actions, the uniform you wear and the country you represent? Clearly, the rest of the readers of your blog expect better of a runner, a father and an Army officer.

  18. I'm so very sorry, and hope that my most recent post expresses my feelings. I was only thinking of a good training run, but see that I was way out of line because so much more goes into putting on a race. Also, I volunteered at the Pat's Run for over four hours the morning of Pat's Run putting in entry forms into the computer, but I see that even that was contradictory. Please accept my apology, and quite honestly it was really bone headed to write about it, but I hope that it shows that I truly did not see what I was doing as "wrong", because I didn't take anything and was careful not to get in anyones way. It is not an excuse, but I hope you can see what I was thinking.

I guess now to stop talking and let my actions try to make up for this mistake.

I am defined by running and feel like an ass.

  19. Lets put this in perspective. JB is not a criminal or a crook, I'm sure he saw it as being a guy who ran next to a group of people who were running in a race on public property. Sounds like the only benefit he actually received is "a secure course." All of you people who commented above should stop being such ungrateful spoiled people and say "THANKS, JB, FOR SERVING OUR COUNTRY. FOR DEFENDING ME, SO I AM FREE TO RUN THIS RACE." Half of the military struggles to pass their PT tests, looking at JB's splits set him far above even the "best of the best." Yeah, he made a mistake, he didn't realize... I think you all owe JB a "THANKS FOR SERVING" as well as an "I'm sorry for being so disrespectful on your personal blog." Also, Captain or not - You have no idea what peoples finances are. He may very well be giving his all in tithe, other charities, spending money traveling "HOME" to visit family because he is SERVING HIS COUNTRY and dislocated. If we all had good intentions of "saving money" our country would not be in the economic trouble it is.

PS... EVERYONE RUNS. I hope your events are not as tacky as your comment. I think you truly owe JB an apology for your comment. Saying you're going to "DO EVERYTHING IN YOUR POWER TO CONTACT YOUR SUPERIORS." Really? I want you to know that "HIS SUPERIORS" have better things to do than deal with your PETTY WHINING. Don't waste their time, with your nonsense. Say thanks to JB for your FREEDOM! Offer a Military Discount, at the very least. What a crappy company!

  20. to the above comment... I was in the military.. and thankful for my freedoms..and to him for continuing to serve.. but that doesn't mean he has the right to be an ass...and the reason we are in economic trouble is because people would rather sit on their asses and get stuff for free (welfare foodstamps unemployment) then actually work.. he is a prime example..

  21. My family still is in the military. I've recently separated to take care of my children as my husband is deployed for months on, four off. My husband is also a Captain, we also have two children, I can relate to trying to save money where you can. Seriously, still calling this guy an ASS? Really, he's made his apology and noted his mistake. I know all to well about people rather sitting on their asses and getting their needs met while the rest of the people work for them. I could blow steam ALL DAY on that subject. Calling JB a PRIME EXAMPLE is so incredibly inaccurate, considering he is active duty and not on the three social services you listed. Name 5 welfare recipients that you know have the self discipline take care of himself as JB. I doubt JB will be soaking up health care funds in the cardiac unit. You should thank him for taking care of his body! Happy Thanksgiving.

  22. I don't want to keep dwelling on this and am trying to make it right. I appreciate the support and in hindsight I see I was wrong, and just hope that my openness about it proves that I didn't do this with malice. I will make it right as best of my ability. The people around here are great and I truly have been blessed with the friendship of the Phoenix running community; and sorry to make a bad impression while down here in the Tucson area. I'll be moving soon to the Chicago area and make sure to always do the right thing there. I'm going to put this to rest and hope everyone has a Happy Holiday Season. I'm heading home tomorrow to be with my family (displaced due to a short 5 month school). Finally, not that it matters, but I do want you all to know that I am a father of three small children, have a house in San Jose California, been deployed twice (CAB; shot out multiple times/blown up in IED once, but none resulting in Purple Heart injuries) and even though I make fair money I usually don't like to "spend" money on shorter races any longer; but will never let that be an excuse in the future for the behavior. I say this to emphasize that I do take your negative comments very seriously and doing everything I can to repair the damage, but there is little more that I can do than make these statement and send the check. Now Happy Thanksgiving and may you all be blessed. I'll be off the internet for several days now.

  23. Steve @ Everyone RunsNovember 24, 2010 at 2:30 PM

I accept Jeff's apology. He has taken a hard dose of verbal comments and all of us now understand his thoughts more clearly, whether right or wrong. Personally, I am incredibly appreciative of our military and thank each and every one of them for my freedoms. Finally, anyone who has been in need has benefited from Everyone Runs. With high unemployment, we have reached out to the unemployed and allowed them to run for free in some of our events. My volunteers always run for free and many of them are unemployed as well. Our community benefits as well. we are not a non-profit, yet we have donated over $35,000 of our own personally funds from our events to local non-profits who are in desperate need these days. So, when you pay to participate in one of our events, you now know where your money is going. Does that make us a "crappy" company? Thanks for your comments. Now go enjoy a HAPPY Thanksgiving!

  24. Several lessons have come from this:
    1. Think before you act or speak.
    2. Act honestly and respond civllly.
    3. Absolutely nothing you post on the internet is private or personal. If you don't want the whole world to know, don't write it.

Now, let's all move forward and be better humans.
